About
Lichfield Cathedral is a treasured landmark in the heart of the country that prides itself in offering a warm welcome to all our visitors.
There is plenty to explore with over 1300 years of history in the only medieval three spired Cathedral in the UK. See a medieval wall painting, the famous Herkenrode stained glass, the Lichfield Gospels (730AD) and Lichfield Angel (700AD), as well as a packed and diverse programme of services, concerts and exhibitions.
What's more, the Cathedral is free to enter, although donations are welcomed and encouraged. We’re thrilled to be able to offer a range of tours, giving you an opportunity to learn about this medieval building and its history and heritage. Free tours are available daily (Mon - Sat) at 11:00 and 14:00 (check the Cathedral website for availability) and a series of specialist tours for groups and group travel partners available upon request.
During your visit, we recommend you explore the Cathedral and its chapels, learn about our treasures (varies throughout the year, please check the website for the latest exhibits), and enjoy a stroll around the picturesque Cathedral Close.
The Close surrounding the Cathedral has its own story to tell, with picturesque gardens, stunning buildings and a vibrant history. A visit to Vicars’ Close will leave you feeling like you’ve stepped back in time as you take in the row of quintessential medieval houses.
In medieval times, the Cathedral Close was a fortified space, with stone walls surrounding the Close on three sides, and the waters of Minister Pool acting as a natural barrier to the south.
Before you leave, don’t miss the gift area, where you can pick up a unique gift for yourself or a loved one.
